License Plate Recognition Gate Entry
Imagine your customer drives up to the gate and it simply opens — no keypad, no app to fumble with, no code to remember or share. That's License Plate Recognition (LPR), and it's the single best upgrade most storage facilities can make to entry. A camera reads the vehicle's plate, the system checks it against your authorized list, and the gate opens automatically. It's faster for customers, more secure for you, and it produces an airtight record of every vehicle that enters and leaves your property.

Why LPR is a fit for storage
Storage customers arrive in the same vehicles every time — the truck that tows the trailer, the motorhome, the boat hauler. That makes the license plate a natural, reliable credential. Shared gate codes get passed around, written down, and never expire; fobs get lost; apps get uninstalled. A plate, by contrast, is tied to a specific vehicle and a specific customer, and it can't be handed to a stranger. For RV and boat lots especially, where entries can back up during weekend rushes, touchless plate entry keeps traffic flowing and reduces the temptation to tailgate.
How it works
A UniFi Protect AI camera positioned at the gate captures the approaching vehicle's plate. The system reads the plate and compares it to your list of authorized customers. If it matches and the customer is within their access hours, the gate opens automatically and the event is logged with a timestamp and an image of the vehicle. If the plate isn't recognized, the gate stays closed, and the attempt is still recorded — so you even have a record of who tried to get in. Authorized customers can still use a backup credential like a code or mobile unlock for guests or rental vehicles.
The security and operational wins
LPR eliminates the biggest weakness of traditional gates: the shared, unchanging code. It creates a vehicle-level audit trail that's invaluable for investigating incidents, resolving billing disputes, and satisfying insurers. It speeds up entry, which customers notice and appreciate. And it works hand-in-hand with your surveillance system, because the same camera platform that reads plates is also recording high-resolution video of every vehicle and driver.
The hardware behind it
We build LPR on Ubiquiti UniFi — a UniFi Access Gate Hub to control the gate paired with a UniFi Protect AI camera capable of license-plate capture, configured for license-plate unlock. Because it's all one platform, plate entry, video recording, and your entry logs live together and are managed remotely. We position and configure the camera for your gate geometry, lighting, and the range of vehicle sizes you serve.
